Our Process

Materials

We begin by hand-selecting all materials from local yards that gather stones from across the country. We appreciate the uniqueness of irregular stones that traditional landscapers might overlook. These irregular pieces enhance the custom look of your project with their character and distinctive appeal. Whether you prefer limestone, field stone, or granite, we select each piece for its quality and natural ability to enhance your surroundings.

Existing Yard Preservation

Lake Mille Lacs - Onamia, MN

A major issue within the landscape industry is the widespread belief that significant yard damage is inevitable. At Coldstone, we prioritize the protection of your existing lawn. For projects involving homes with established landscaping and lawns, we take proactive measures from start to finish. We cover all work areas and equipment paths with plywood to safeguard your yard. Our approach extends to every phase of the project: we unload materials with care, avoiding dumping directly onto your property, and haul stones in trailers along designated paths. Additionally, we ensure that paved driveways remain clean from any debris. This careful approach ensures that upon completion, your property remains pristine, without the need for any post-project repairs.

Custom Installations

Coldstone’s approach to any project from a staircase, to a patio, or a retaining wall, is distinctly custom and precise. We use specialized techniques such as the feather and wedge method for splitting stones. Each specific piece is manipulated to fit seamlessly together. This careful craftsmanship not only ensures minimal seams between pieces but also guarantees a perfect fit that enhances both the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of the installation. Our commitment to custom techniques results in a finished product that is as durable as it is visually striking.

Feather and Wedge Splitting

To split large rocks during projects, we use the feather and wedge technique. First, a series of holes are drilled into the rock, typically following a natural seam to guide the split. Into these holes, small feather and wedge tools are inserted. By pounding the wedges, they exert pressure on the feathers, gradually causing the rock to split along the desired line. This method allows us to manage and position large rocks effectively.

Rock Sawing

We utilize rock saws to achieve precision cuts for our stonework. This allows us to ensure that each piece fits together seamlessly. By tailoring each rock to its intended spot, we create a polished and cohesive look that enhances the overall aesthetic of a project.
